Symptoms

Symptoms of liver cancer include:

  • Easily bruising or bleeding

  • Buildup of fluid in legs and/or abdomen

  • Jaundice, in which skin and eyes take on a yellow color

  • Intensely itchy skin

  • Ruptured blood vessels resulting from blood backing up in the blood vessels leading to the liver

  • Heightened sensitivity to medications and side effects

  • Development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

  • Development of encephalopathy, in which toxins build up in the brain, causing confusion, problems with concentration, memory, sleeping or other mental functioning

Liver Failure

Liver failure occurs when the liver loses most or all of its function. This condition is life-threatening and requires urgent medical attention. Symptoms of liver failure include:

  • Loss of appetite

  • Fatigue

  • Diarrhea

  • Confusion and disorientation

  • Extreme sleepiness

  • Coma

Because the first few symptoms listed above may be symptoms of many other diseases or conditions, it may not initially be apparent that it is liver failure. As liver failure progresses, often the only option is a liver transplant.

Chronic liver failure is liver damage occurring over a long period of time, usually as a result of cirrhosis.
